The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites people interested in wildlife and outdoor skills to check out the winter program schedule for the Minnesota Outdoor Skills and Stewardship webinar series every Wednesday:02/26/2025 Reading the landscapeEpisode: 201Have you ever walked through an area and wondered "What happened here?" All environments are products of disturbance and succession, competing forces that are always shaping a landscape to varying degrees. Environments are never static, they are always changing, and there are always reasons that can be found for what you are observing. Through this session, Bryan Wood, executive director of Osprey Wilds Environmental Learning Center, will teach the concepts of how to read a landscape, from making observations about the patterns and outliers you see, to thinking through the possible factors at play, including human and natural disturbance, and ecological succession. Feel like a detective as you start discovering clues that allow you to tell the story of an area. Learn universal rules for reading a landscape that you can carry with you wherever you go, allowing you to better observe and understand why landscapes are the way they are.The Minnesota Outdoor Skills and Stewardship Series webinars are free and offered year-round, though registration is required. DNR Fish and Wildlife AlmanacA weekly list of news briefs about fish, wildlife, and habitat management.Minnesota DNR webinar focuses on flying squirrels:The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites people interested in wildlife and outdoor skills to check out the winter program schedule for the Minnesota Outdoor Skills and Stewardship webinar series.After a break from weekly webinars the first week of December, they return on Wednesday, Dec. 11, when Michael Joyce, wildlife ecologist with the Natural Resources Research Institute, will discuss the two species of flying squirrels in Minnesota. Joyce is interested in documenting and understanding recent changes of their distribution in the state.
