DNR Fish and Wildlife AlmanacMinnesota DNR webinars focus on winter outdoor activities for kids, red-headed woodpeckers:The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites people interested in wildlife and outdoor skills to check out the winter program schedule for the Minnesota Outdoor Skills and Stewardship webinar series.On Wednesday, Dec. 18, Pete Cleary, environmental education director at Dodge Nature Center, will share a wealth of ideas and tips on how to get your kids outside and moving this winter.On Wednesday, Jan. 8, Dr. Elena West from the Minnesota Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Minnesota will share information on the Red-headed Woodpecker Research and Recovery Project. Red-headed woodpeckers are in decline in Minnesota and throughout their range. Learn about the collaborative work between volunteers, staff, educators, and partner organizations that is central to the research and recovery project.The Minnesota Outdoor Skills and Stewardship Series webinars are free and offered year-round, though registration is required. DNR Fish and Wildlife AlmanacA weekly list of news briefs about fish, wildlife, and habitat management.Minnesota DNR webinar focuses on flying squirrels:The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources invites people interested in wildlife and outdoor skills to check out the winter program schedule for the Minnesota Outdoor Skills and Stewardship webinar series.After a break from weekly webinars the first week of December, they return on Wednesday, Dec. 11, when Michael Joyce, wildlife ecologist with the Natural Resources Research Institute, will discuss the two species of flying squirrels in Minnesota. Joyce is interested in documenting and understanding recent changes of their distribution in the state. Minnesota DNR webinars:Wednesday, Nov. 27, Beth Holbrook, Minnesota DNR fisheries research scientist, will discuss changes in Minnesota’s yellow perch populations, including the latest research results and what that means for perch as an important prey for big game fish and for anglers who are targeting perch.
